We've been on a fascinating journey to reach zero waste and
trying to understand and implement the things we need to
make this reality. That a printing company could manage this
and manage to divert over 90% of its trash is still a little
unbelievable. But it's something we achieved with the hard
work and creativity of our staff and friends.
It's our honor and pleasure to earn TRUE certification, and
we're grateful to join the numerous other companies around
the country that have reached this milestone. Our heartfelt
thanks goes out to the USGBC group, especially the USGBC
Central Plains for their ongoing support and encouragement.
When we first floated the idea of creating a zero waste facility,
I'll admit, I was a little overwhelmed.
We had already achieved the US Green Building Council LEED
Platinum certification for our headquarters and
manufacturing plant; in that process, as you can imagine, we
figured out how to recycle a lot of our waste, like paper,
cardboard, and plastic, but we had a long way to go to achieve
zero waste.
So the challenge was finding solutions for hard-to-recycle
items and engaging employees to help us achieve true zero
waste. One step led to another and today we divert more than
90% of our waste from the landfill. It has been great for our
company sustainability, and mission for the planet and for our
bottom line.
